- Choose the compressionPick Smaller file for most images. Pick Exact pixels when every pixel must stay the same.

Lossy or lossless: which WebP should you pick?
WebP can save an image in two ways. Lossy mode drops tiny details your eyes rarely notice. This gives the smallest files. Lossless mode keeps every single pixel. The file is still smaller than PNG, but not by as much.
Here is a simple rule. Use lossy for photos that were saved as PNG. Use lossless for logos, icons, charts and screenshots with sharp text.
| Mode | What happens | Best for | Speed |
|---|---|---|---|
| Smaller file (lossy) | Tiny details may change | Photos, banners, blog images | Very fast |
| Exact pixels (lossless) | Every pixel stays the same | Logos, icons, UI screenshots, charts | Slower on large photos |
Our test: how much smaller does a PNG get?
Real results from this tool
We ran two very different PNG files through this converter in Chrome. The first was a 1600 × 1067 photo saved as PNG. The second was a 1200 × 800 graphic with a colour bar and lines of text, like a screenshot.
The lesson surprised us. For the text graphic, lossless mode made a file ten times smaller than lossy mode. Flat colours and sharp text compress very well without loss. For the photo, lossy mode won by a mile. Lossless mode also took about 11 seconds on the large photo, while lossy mode finished in under a second.
Does WebP keep the transparent background?
Yes. WebP supports a full alpha channel, just like PNG. Soft shadows, rounded edges and see-through areas stay the same after you convert. This is true in both lossy and lossless mode.
Tip: The checkered pattern behind each preview shows you where the transparent parts are.

When you should keep the PNG
WebP is great for websites. Still, it is not the right pick for every job. Keep your PNG in these cases:
- Printing. Print shops usually ask for PNG, TIFF or PDF files.
- Editing later. Some older design apps cannot open WebP files.
- Email newsletters. A few email apps still do not show WebP images.
- Favicons. Site icons are usually saved as ICO or PNG.
- Upload forms. Some forms only accept JPG or PNG. Read the rules first.
Tips to get the best from this PNG to WebP converter
- Resize first. A 4000 px image shown at 1200 px wastes space. Use the Resize width option.
- Start at 90% quality for lossy mode. Drop to 80% for big background images.
- Try both modes on screenshots. Lossless often wins on flat graphics.
- Watch the green badge. It shows how much space you saved for each file.
- Keep your original PNG. You may need it for print or future edits.
Using WebP images on your website
WordPress has accepted WebP uploads since version 5.8. Most other website builders support it too. Upload the WebP file the same way you upload a JPG or PNG. Remember to add clear alt text. Smaller images help your pages load faster, which is good for visitors on slow mobile data.

Frequently asked questions
Is this PNG to WebP converter really free?
Yes. There are no limits, no watermarks and no account. The tool runs in your own browser, so it costs us nothing to run.
Are my PNG files uploaded anywhere?
No. The conversion happens on your own device. Your images never travel to our server. You can even turn off Wi-Fi after the page loads and it will keep working for lossy mode.
Will I lose quality when I convert PNG to WebP?
In lossless mode, you lose nothing at all. In lossy mode at 90%, most people cannot see any difference. Lower settings make files smaller but can blur fine details.
Can I convert many PNG files at once?
Yes. Add as many files as you like. They convert one after another. When two or more are done, a Download all (ZIP) button appears.
Why is my WebP bigger than the PNG?
This can happen with tiny icons or images with few colours. The tool shows an orange badge when that happens. Switch to lossless mode or lower the quality. If it is still bigger, keep the PNG.
Does it work on iPhone and Android?
Yes. It works in Chrome, Safari, Edge and Firefox on phones and computers. On some older iPhones, the tool loads a small helper the first time you make WebP files.
