How to convert PNG to JPG

Why do some PNGs turn black when converted?
PNG files can have see-through areas. JPG files cannot. When a basic converter changes PNG to JPG, it has to fill those areas with something. Many tools fill them with black, which ruins logos and stickers. This tool fills them with white by default. You can also choose your own colour in the Fill transparent areas box.
Our test: a photo saved as PNG
Photo vs screenshot
We converted two PNG files to JPG at the default 85% quality. One was a 2400 × 1600 photo saved as PNG. The other was a 1440 × 900 screenshot of an app screen with text.
For the photo, JPG saved a huge amount of space with no visible change. For the screenshot, the saving was much smaller. JPG can also add faint smudges around sharp text. So convert photos to JPG, but keep screenshots as PNG or use WebP.
PNG vs JPG: which one to keep?
| Feature | PNG | JPG |
|---|---|---|
| Best for | Logos, icons, screenshots with text | Photos |
| Transparency | Yes | No |
| File size for photos | Very large | Small |
| Quality | Lossless | Lossy (you choose the level) |
| Accepted by forms | Often | Almost always |
Keep PNG for logos and anything with a clear background. Switch to JPG for photos and when a form asks for JPG. For websites, our PNG to WebP converter gives even smaller files and keeps transparency.
Frequently asked questions
How do I convert PNG to JPG without a black background?
This tool fills transparent areas with white automatically. Choose another colour in the Fill transparent areas box if you like.
Does PNG to JPG reduce quality?
JPG uses compression, so a tiny bit of detail is lost. At 85% quality, which is the default, the change is very hard to see.
Can I batch convert PNG to JPG?
Yes. Drop them all in. When two or more are done, download them as a ZIP.
Is JPG the same as JPEG?
Yes. JPG and JPEG are the same format. The files simply use a different ending.
Are my files uploaded?
No. The conversion runs inside your browser.

Final thoughts
PNG is a great format for logos, icons and screenshots. For photos, though, it creates huge files. Converting those photos to JPG saves a lot of space. It also makes them easy to upload almost anywhere. Our test cut a photo saved as PNG from 5.89 MB to just 606 KB.
This PNG to JPG converter also solves the black background problem. Transparent areas are filled with white or the colour you pick. Convert one file or a whole batch, then download them in a ZIP. Your images never leave your device. Keep your original PNG files for logos and editing.
