What the generator does
- Makes every letter lowercase.
- Turns letters with accents into plain letters, so Café becomes cafe.

- Removes small words like a, the and of, if you want.
- Joins words with hyphens and trims the slug at a word break.
Our test: three real titles
From long titles to short slugs
We ran three titles through the tool with its default settings: hyphens, 60 characters and small words removed.
The first title kept its numbers and lost only in. The second lost six small words, including how to. Add how to in Words to always keep if you want those words in the URL. In the French title, é and ù turned into plain letters, so the slug works in any browser.
Slug best practices
| Do | Avoid |
|---|---|
| Use your main keyword | Stuffing many keywords |
| Keep it short: 3–5 words | Full sentences |
| Use hyphens between words | Underscores or spaces |
| Use lowercase only | Capital letters |
| Keep it the same after publishing | Changing old slugs without a redirect |
Changing a live slug? Always add a 301 redirect from the old URL to the new one. Otherwise people and search engines will hit a 404 error page.
Frequently asked questions
Should I use hyphens or underscores?
Use hyphens. Google treats a hyphen as a space between words. Underscores join words together.
Should I put the year in my slug?
Only if the year is part of the topic, like an event. For guides you update, leave the year out so the URL stays fresh.
How long should a slug be?
Short is best. Most good slugs have 3 to 5 words and fewer than 60 characters.
Does it work for non-English titles?
It handles letters with accents, like é, ü and ñ. Letters from other scripts are removed, so write those slugs in English.
