JPG to WebP Converter: Make Photos Lighter for a Faster Website

Turn JPG and JPEG photos into light WebP files. Resize them in the same step. Everything happens on your device.

      • 100% free
      • No sign-up
      • Files never leave your device
      • Batch + ZIP download

Use this free JPG to WebP converter to shrink photos before you put them on a website. You can convert JPEG to WebP in bulk, set the quality and resize in one go. The photos never leave your computer or phone.

How to convert JPG to WebP in 4 steps

      1. Add your photosDrop JPG or JPEG files into the box. You can add many at once.
      2. Pick a quality80% is a good start for most web photos. Move the slider to compare sizes.
      3. Resize if neededChoose a width like 1280 px for blog photos. This often saves more than quality does.
      4. Save your WebP filesDownload them one by one, or as a single ZIP file.

Our test: one photo, five settings

What really makes a JPG smaller?

We took a 1600 × 1067 JPG photo from this website. The original file was 172 KB. Then we converted it with different settings in this tool.

      80 KBWebP at 80% quality (−54%)
      58 KBWebP at 70% quality (−66%)
      148 KBWebP at 90% quality (−14%)
      51 KB80% quality + 1280 px width (−70%)

Two things stood out. First, 90% quality saved very little, because the JPG was already compressed. Second, resizing to 1280 px saved more than any quality change. So for blog photos, resize first. Then pick a quality between 70% and 80%.

      Which quality should you choose?

There is no single best number. It depends on where the photo will appear. Use this table as a starting point:

      Where the photo goesQualityWidth
Big header or hero image80–85%1920 px
Photo inside a blog post75–80%1280 px
      Product photo with zoom85%2000 px
      Small thumbnail70%400–800 px
      Background behind text60–70%1920 px

Why use a JPG to WebP converter?

      • Faster pages. Photos are often the heaviest part of a page. Smaller photos load sooner.
      • Less mobile data. Visitors on slow networks see your page faster.
      • Better page speed scores. The largest image on a page often decides how fast it feels.
      • Lower hosting costs. Smaller files use less bandwidth each month.

Why is my WebP sometimes bigger than the JPG?

This happens when the JPG is already very compressed. WebP cannot squeeze much more out of it at a high quality setting. The tool shows an orange badge when the new file is bigger. Lower the quality or resize the photo. If it is still bigger, keep the JPG.

Avoid repeat conversions. Each lossy save removes a little detail. Always convert from your best original photo, not from a file that was already converted.

What happens to photo details like location?

Camera photos often hold hidden data called EXIF. It can include the camera model, date and even GPS location. This converter does not copy that data into the WebP file. That keeps your location private when you share photos online. The picture is still turned the right way up.

      Frequently asked questions

Is JPG to WebP conversion free?

Yes, it is fully free. There is no sign-up, no file limit and no watermark.

Does converting JPG to WebP lose quality?

WebP in this tool uses lossy compression, like JPG. At 80% or higher, most people see no difference on screen. For the best result, start from the original photo.

Can I convert JPEG to WebP in bulk?

Yes. Drop a whole set of photos at once. When they are done, use Download all (ZIP).

Will WebP photos work on my phone?

Modern iPhones and Android phones can open WebP photos. Some older gallery apps may not. Keep your JPG copies just in case.

Can I upload WebP images to WordPress?

Yes. WordPress supports WebP uploads since version 5.8. Upload them in the Media Library like any other image.

Are my photos uploaded to a server?

No. All the work happens inside your browser. Your photos stay on your device.

      Final thoughts

Converting JPG to WebP is a quick win for any website. Our test showed a clear pattern. Quality changes helped, but resizing helped even more. A 172 KB photo dropped to just 51 KB once we resized it to 1280 px and saved it at 80% quality. That is a 70% saving with no visible loss on a normal screen.

Start with your best original photo. Pick a sensible width for the place it will appear. Then choose a quality between 70% and 85%. Keep the original JPG for printing and sharing. This free converter does all of this in your browser. Your photos stay private, and your pages get faster.
